We live in a time when the bride should be preparing herself for the return of her groom, but the bride is tired of waiting.

Christ’s Impatient Bride

But I speak of the church, as the church should be preparing for the return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

We saw a similar scenario in the Old Testament in Exodus Chapter 32. Moses went up to the mountain to commune with God. The people were left below to wait for Moses’ return. However, the people got tired of waiting, and complained to Aaron that Moses was too long in coming. So, Aaron had the people come and bring their gold and lay it at his feet. And Aaron fashioned a golden calf for the people to worship, and the people turned their attention away from God, to worship the golden calf.

Today, the church is weary of waiting for the return of Jesus Christ. So, they have brought their monies and laid it at the feet of their Pastors, who have then fashioned amusements for them, modern golden calves to focus their attention on. Jobs, careers, houses, cars, and material riches have now replaced a love of God in the hearts of the people. And now, Christ’s bride, has forgotten she is to prepare herself for the return of her groom, and has turned her heart to worshipping earthly things.

But the bride is not the only one who is tired of waiting. Many of the leaders that Jesus has commissioned to tend to the flock have also gotten tired of waiting:

But if that servant says to himself, ‘My master is delayed in coming,’ and begins to beat the male and female servants, and to eat and drink and get drunk, the master of that servant will come on a day when he does not expect him and at an hour he does not know, and will cut him in pieces and put him with the unfaithful. Luke 12:45-46

Many of the leaders of the church have seen that Jesus is delayed in coming, so they have begun to abuse the sheep, not expecting their Chief Shepherd to come in anytime soon to rebuke them. This has been seen most vividly in the Catholic Church, where Priests have been getting away with abusing children for years. But also in the Protestant Church, the “personal responsibility” Gospel, based upon American Capitalistic Principle, along with an emphasis on tithes and offerings, have left the sheep battered and broke.

Jesus spent much of his time on earth rebuking those in power for their role in oppressing their workers, widows, orphans, and immigrants. Today’s church rebukes their own members, preachers the “self help”, or “personal responsibility” Gospel, and lets the rich and powerful off scott-free. Worse, they even imply that their riches are a result of God’s blessings, and that the sheep should emulate their ways, and desire to be like them. They do this because they believe that the Master is long in coming, and that they will not be held to account for their actions.
